What You Will Do
As the HR Director for North America, you will lead on all People related matters and initiatives across the US and Canada, providing a generalist service spanning all aspects of the people agenda, from employee onboarding, driving initiatives to optimise the employee experience in line with Ocado Group People strategy and business strategies in the United States and Canada.
Reporting to the Head of Regional People who is based in the UK, you will act as the overall owner of North America, ensuring we have a fully integrated people function and that it's set up for success. You will work in close collaboration with senior business leaders, translating their strategies into clear achievable people initiatives, whilst focusing on prioritising the key business objectives.

In addition to the above, your responsibilities would include:
Leadership
- Collaborative approach to partnering with senior leaders in North America and translating their strategies into people initiatives which are practical and address key business objectives.
- Proactively assess current and emerging business objectives within North America, to ensure continued alignment / realignment of People plan objectives.
- Line management and development of a People team in North America (matrixed structure consisting of direct and indirect resources in North America), plus remote global support (non-reporting) from the UK ;
- Manage team resources and workflow to ensure quality and timely delivery of the People plan for North America, whilst maintaining strong team health and high levels of engagement.
Employment Relations / Industrial Relations
- Provide case support to team members, ensuring they handle case work consistently and to a high-standard.
- Actively own certain aspects of casework, typically where cases are particularly complex and/or at senior levels.
- Work in partnership with North America leaders and people managers to develop a positive industrial relations environment which is independent of 3rd party representation (although experience of 3rd party industrial relations environments would be beneficial).
Workforce Planning and Talent Acquisition
- Create robust workforce plans which align with the future and evolving needs of the business.
- Work with North America leaders and the COE to formulate short-term (one year) hiring plans.
- Work in close partnership with the COE to ensure that the hiring needs of the business are delivered; always balancing the need for quality, speed and cost effectiveness.
- Oversight of all hiring activity across North America and actively support specific hiring initiatives, typically at senior levels.
Talent Management & Development
- Work in close partnership with the COE to ensure that appropriate assessments of the current talent pool are conducted and good knowledge of the strength and depth of the talent pool is maintained.
- Similarly, work the COE to ensure the delivery of agreed development interventions to support the development of talent (at an individual or cross groups of people).
- Ensure that succession planning for key roles are constructed, maintained and used in the decision making process of appointing people to future roles
Reward
- Work in close partnership with the COE to ensure that compensation and benefits practices continue to facilitate the hiring, motivation and retention of the talent needed to deliver business objectives; whilst balancing the need with commercial realities.
People Operations
- Work in partnership with the COE to ensure the effective and timely delivery of operational and transactional services for North America.
- Conduct regular review of service levels and identify initiatives to further develop the model for delivering operational and transactional services.
Employee Engagement
- Work in partnership with North America leaders and people managers to analyse employee survey data and develop local plans which are actionable, well communicated and delivered upon.
Change Management
- Work in partnership with North America leaders and people managers to effectively plan and execute on organisational change initiatives, e.g. business restructuring, new/changed working practises, etc
Client Relationship and Partnership
- For people related activities, directly or through their own team, manage the relationship with strategic client partners across the US and Canada.
Who You Are
To qualify for this position, you must meet the following requirements:
- SHRM qualified or equivalent.
- Significant experience in a generalist role, with deep experience of core people processes such as talent acquisition, reward (including pay reviews), talent management, employee engagement.
- Experience of working in a global organisation and matrix structure where success is achieved through a number of stakeholders (e.g. COE’s, Shared Service Operation, etc).
- Experience spanning multi-sectors within North America (e.g. Construction, Technology, Retail) and in organisations which have scaled at pace.
- People leadership experience and a passion for developing others.
- Data savvy with a proven track record of using data analytics and insights to drive change and make decisions.
- Well developed stakeholder management skills to build strong relationships and partner with business leaders at multiple levels; the ability to influence is key.
- Commercially focused approach to people initiatives and solutions.
- Good understanding of US and Canadian employment legislation and ability to apply this effectively in a commercially focused business environment.
- Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google products. Experience of working with HR systems such as Workday, Greenhouse, Peakon, etc (or their equivalents)
- Strong ability to work in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.
